With the rollout of the Information Blocking regulations as well as the expansion of the USCDI data set to include more electronic PHI, it is imperative for HIM Directors to continually assess and expand their Legal Health Record and Designated Record Set Policies as it relates to the ePHI disclosure. Clear guidelines that staff charged with release of information can follow is essential to maintain sound and compliant ROI processes.

There is no one size fits all for defining your organization’s legal health record and designated record set. It takes a multidisciplinary team composed of HIM, medical staff, nursing, IT, risk, and compliance to ensure that needs will be met in relation to patient care needs.
